A Diplomat in Japan
by Sir Ernest Satow
xDiplomat.tif (41562 bytes)
Sir Ernest Satow spent over 21 years in diplomatic service in Japan, starting in 1862, on the eve of the Meiji Restoration. In this book, originally published in 1921, he records the inner history of those critical years in the evolution of Japan when the ports were opened and the monarchy restored, as well as giving an account of his personal experiences during that period. Sir Ernest (1843-1929) arrived in Japan as an interpreter for the Foreign Office, and later worked as a secretary to the British Legation in Tokyo, spending a total of 21 years in Japan.
