The Mikado’s Empire
A History of Japan from the Mythological Age to Meiji Era
by William E. Griffis
xMikado.tif (43058 bytes)
This book, first published in 1876, was regarded for a long time as the major source of information about Japan for westerners. It is still important as the first complete history of Japan, including its mythology. Griffis (1843-1928) became interested in Japan through his acquaintance with a Japanese student during his years at Rutgers College. He stayed in Japan as a teacher for four years, and later came to be regarded as a pioneer in modern Japanese studies.
