The English version, translated from the orginal French version published in 1997, is a work by the journalist and cultural researcher Huu Ngoc. The book offers a comprehensive panorama of Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, from its founding in the 11th century to the present. An array of issues that capture many of the facets of Hanoi´s history and culture are succintly discussed in six chapters - including the myths of the origin of the city, descriptions of a multitude of streets and their relevance to the city´s character, and an overview of palaces and citadels that helped shape Hanoi´s history. Over 200 color illustrations along with historic accounts from French sources and bits of the city as seen through the eyes of poets contribute to a rich body of literature vividly depicting Hanoi. The book also sheds light on the future of the city and Hanoians as they enter the 21st century.
