The English version, translated from the orginal French version published in 1997, is a work by the journalist and cultural researcher Huu Ngoc. The book offers a comprehensive panorama of Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, from its founding in the 11th century to the present. An array of issues that capture many of the facets of Hanoi“s history and culture are succintly discussed in six chapters - including the myths of the origin of the city, descriptions of a multitude of streets and their relevance to the city“s character, and an overview of palaces and citadels that helped shape Hanoi“s history. Over 200 color illustrations along with historic accounts from French sources and bits of the city as seen through the eyes of poets contribute to a rich body of literature vividly depicting Hanoi. The book also sheds light on the future of the city and Hanoians as they enter the 21st century. Published by The Gioi
